TL;DR — The short version

Throttle is designed to be private by default. Here's what that means in plain English:

1. What Throttle Does

Throttle is a browser extension for Chrome that sits on top of AI chat interfaces (ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini). It allows you to customize how AI models respond to you by injecting style and identity instructions into your messages, and displays a context window usage meter while you chat.

Throttle operates entirely within your browser. It does not have a server-side component that processes your chats, stores your messages, or proxies your requests to AI services.

2. Data We Do NOT Collect

To be unambiguous:

3. Data Stored Locally in Your Browser

Throttle stores your preferences and settings locally using chrome.storage.local. This includes:

This data never leaves your device through Throttle. It is not synced to our servers. If you uninstall the extension, this data is deleted by the browser.

Important: Your identity profile may include personal information you voluntarily type in (like your name or job title). This is used solely to prepend context to your AI messages and is never transmitted to us.

4. Anonymous Analytics

Throttle collects anonymous, aggregated usage events to understand how the product is used and to prioritize improvements. We use PostHog for this purpose.

Events we track include:

Each event is associated with a randomly generated ID that is created on install and stored locally. This ID is not linked to any personal identifier — it cannot be used to identify you as an individual.

We do not collect:

You can opt out of analytics by disabling Throttle from the popup — no events are sent while the extension is disabled.

5. Optional Email Newsletter

If you choose to enter your email address in the newsletter signup form on our onboarding page or website, we will store your email to send you product updates. This is entirely optional and is not required to use Throttle.

6. Chrome Web Store

When you install Throttle through the Chrome Web Store, Google collects information as part of their standard installation process, subject to Google's Privacy Policy. We do not receive or control this data.

7. Third-Party Services

Throttle integrates with the following third-party services:

Throttle does not integrate with advertising networks, data brokers, or social media trackers.

8. Children's Privacy

Throttle is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided personal information to us, please contact us and we will delete it promptly.

9. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the "last updated" date at the top of this page. We encourage you to review this policy periodically. Continued use of Throttle after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
